By that very crude formulation the 7,000-10,000 spam per day our organization blocks would be worth about $198.48/day ($.00467/sec * 8500 spams/day * 5 sec/spam).
In a year that's ~ $51,000 in lost productivity. I know that's a "management math" number but it's the best approximation I can serve up for real losses.
Also, these are mails that are stopped by a server that we maintain (more labor cost) and requires a hardware service agreement on top of initial cost...all adding more $$ to the loss attributable to SPAM.
As to the $500/spam that's nuts. I put it closer to $.0234 per spam. Let?s say 3cents American for an organization with a median salary of $35,000 for mail-enabled employees regardless of spam volume.
