The dog didn't climb into the trunk to search it, it merely sniffed around the outside collecting the scents that were in the air. In the same way that a police officer can observe contraband that is in "plain sight", can't a dog do the same to something that is in "plain scent".
In any case it's a strech to try and apply this to packet sniffing.
