As the person charged with maintaining security on all the Windows desktop PCs where I work, I can tell you 1) not all the PCs are up-to-date on their security patches. 2) They won't be all up-to-date for several more months. 3) The process of becoming informed of needed updates for applications is extremely time consuming and painful. 4) Several of the mission critical applications run in the labs _cannot_ run on up-to-date Windows PCs. The patches or OS versions. WinXP w/SP2 in particular break the applications.
All my home PCs and on those work PCs where I've set up Linux as host and have VMWare windows guests are a joy to maintain. Everything else is hell.
