AutoLink clearly adds enhancement too. If AutoLink (or smart tags) were "opt in" nobody would. The whole point of this feature is to add links to pages where they are missing. Why would a web author "opt-in" to AutoLink instead of just linking their ISBN numbers or whatever?
I haven't tried it, because I don't use IE, but the tool sounds very useful and to suggest sites deserve an opt-out mechanism is absurd. Next you'll be saying sites should be able to opt-out of having their text resizable ("oh no! it messes up my layout!") or having the page be printable.
or "This Save As feature... as a content creator I'm offended! Why can't I opt-out?!"
give me a break.
