My personal favourite piece of malware of all time was nimda. Cast your mind back to 2001, not long after Code Red/Blue/Red II ete, to a time when worms also propogated from IIS server to IIS server.
This worm may not have had as large an impact as say slammer, but what made it special was that it 4 attack different vectors.
- IIS server to IIS server
- through IE it could infect a person browsing a site hosted on an infected IIS server
- through email, using the same IE vuln
- through network shares
As far as I am aware, nothing before or after has had such a comprehensive range of methods attack.
