It may have been unethical to snoop for this data, but I also think it should be reasonable to test a site that holds personal information about yourself to see whether they are doing a reasonable job of protecting that data. The hacker certainly was the one who sparked this issue, he should have simply told the company of their defect. Oh, but these days you can get arrested for doing just this. You can't win no matter what you do. Companies do a terrible job of protecting our data and then press charges against you if you try to prove it.
