I do think that the decision to drop the practical was done with much thought and their new testing methodology in place. SANS/GIAC is an excellent organization with great training.
I am sure they have the same concerns as most about moving from the practical exam.
I am sure it was a tough decision for them, and they do not want to see their certifications lose value.
I also believe that the practical was just a possible, "step" and not the end all.
How many of us have seen those "book smart" people that can write the greatest of papers.
Does it truly show a "practical" side?
Until a "hands on" practical that can really show your stuff comes along, I think SANS has done what it can.
Also, from a purely practical stand point of business, yes, it does take a lot more recourses to grade these papers.
This means more over head and more costs.
Which translates to everything costing more?
So let?s just wait and see how things go.
SANS is always working hard to keep the standard it has and will have.
