Security for the Paranoid
Mark Burnett, 2005-04-26

Paranoia is the key to success in the security world. Is it time to worry when other security professionals consider you too paranoid?

Greets.

I thoroughly enjoyed your article, Security for the Paranoid. I have been burning shredded documents, mixing the shredded documents with various ashes, then throwing them out randomly. After reading your article, i think i may try mulching the shredded documents, however, i may setup a small security system to monitor the mulch box.

Perhaps the two best sentences of the article, imho, are, "I do it because it's good security. I try to run my own network the same way I tell my clients to."

FWIW, Terrafly.com appears to use dated images. One of the coolest companies around, Google, offers http://maps.google.com/ , which is worth checking out, plus it is quicker, in color, and pop-up free.

On my side of the wire, some banks offer higher PIN lengths than the pathetic 4. My current PIN is 12 characters. When i first created my PIN, i asked how long my PIN could be, and the banker who helped me told me the limit was 4 characters. I shrugged, and proceeded to entered a 20 digit PIN. I left the bank, and checked later to see how many characters their system actually took. Twelve. Changing it always yeilds the same response from the banker who helps me, as they realize i am still pressing buttons when most people are done. It's almost discomforting to think how non-security minded the people who watch over my money actually are.

To close my ramblings, i again thank you for the good articles, and books, which you have provided to the community. It's good to know that some people still practice what they preach.
