Most of the non Microsoft applications (Lotus Notes, SAP, inhouse developed applications etc) are usually tested on a particular set of versions of an operating system. There is always a lag between release of a new version of windows and support announcement by the application vendors.

There might be a case where an automatic windows features/version update under subscription model might render the non-Microsoft applications to ?malfunction?.

There have been instances where patches for windows OS have even affected functioning of Microsoft based applications (like MS Exchange etc)
