How much do you trust your government? That's a question that all of us have to ask, perhaps the more often the better. Thomas Jefferson, one of the founders of the United States and its third President, wrote to Abigail Adams in 1787 sentences that may seem incredible to many people today:

The government does not "do things to the best of it's ability". It does whatever it damn well pleases, and that usually involves doing whatever will most directly benefit whoever happens to be in charger of a particular part of it. This often is based on getting re-elected, so it has perhaps a little bit of sense, but those actions are almost exclusively limited to visual and rhetorical changes, rather than behind the curtains substantial changes that will bring about real good. If your constituents can't see you working for them, why bother doing it?
