Everyone who talks about the new legislation that is coming in to reduce "terrorist" threats seems to mention the sunset date. What is the point of putting a sunset date on this type of legislation? It means in five years when the legislation ends and the general public feels secure again there will no longer be anything in place to avoid another terrorist strike.

Rather than putting a best by date on legislation that greatly restricts our freedom we should spend the time to build something that will attempt to prevent a terrorist strike. If we think it will take six months to come up with good legislation then we already have things like the war measures act to deal with security threats in the mean time, if the government feels our security has degraded to such a point that they need to be enacted so be it. Otherwise we should wait the six months for good legislation that will fix the problem without damaging the freedom we value.
