Microsoft and Claria, together at last?
Scott Granneman, 2005-07-13

I don't get mad too easily, but there's one thing guaranteed to really get me steaming, and that's when someone is lying to me. Right now I'm feeling lied to, and while I could be wrong, I don't think I am. Worse, I don't think I'm the only one who's the victim here. I think virtually all of you are having your chains yanked as well.

Scott,

I understand your pain and frustration, but it's obvious that you (and many others) do not fully understand the adware/spyware landscape. There is active and evolving legislation (in California and at the Federal level) aimed at defining, controlling and regulating legitamite adware companies and less-reputable spyware companies. Microsoft and all other legitamite anti-spyware companies are working with these lawmaking organizations and with legitamite adware companies to provide consistant definitions and policies where previously none existed. If you did a little more research I think you will find plausible and legitamite reasons why MS and other anti-spyware companies are making the changes they have.

I personally think there is a tremendous difference between spyware that sneaks onto your machine, can't be uninstalled, takes personal information and offers no user value versus legitamite adware which users must agree to install, easily removed, identifies served ads as coming from the software, takes no personally identifiable information, and offers (some) value in exchange for this information (ie. use of software/services). If you look at where Claria is today, I think you will find they are much more akin to adware than spyware.

You may be of the opinion that adware is just as bad, but there are many legitamite companies currently using/providing adware that you may not realize. Companies such as Yahoo, Google, and MSN are just a few.
