Legal disassembly
Mark Rasch, 2005-08-22

When security researcher and ISS employee Michael Lynn went to give a presentation at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, little did he know he would ignite a legal firestorm questioning whether even the act of looking for security vulnerabilities violates the law.

This is just a general comment, vice being specific to this article. I believe that this whole disassebly issue is another example of Corporate America flexing it's monetary muscle to have laws passed for it. While I agree that intellectual copyright laws (not sure if this is the correct terminology) are there for a reason, I don't agree that it should be unlawful to disassemble said code. This is kind of like the laws that protect the t.v and internet cable providers here in Canada ie: once the main cable feed has been terminated to your home, you must still pay for further cable feeds of the main one. Well my line is once at your home you can do what you want with it. I see this as being an extension of the current disassembly laws prohibiting one from disassembling code once the product is purchased. You bought it, you own it! The analogy I often like to use is the following; technology has finally levelled the playing field, and corporate America doesn't like it. Whether it be p2p file sharing of movies and music, or talented individuals disassembling code. You gotta love the influence that $$$ have on any industry.
