Crime? What crime?
Kelly Martin, 2005-09-14

If there's one thing I've learned in the past few years as editor of SecurityFocus, it's that there is absolutely no saving grace in the security world. Everyone is a target, everyone is vulnerable and exposed, and no one is safe from, well... anything.

I'm not a moron, nor do I exploit lemmings. Hell, you can't even finish a level without them. Anyway, people do not have a right to be respected according to me. No one is entitled to my respect, nor do I blindly expect that people should automatically respect me. Respect is something to be earned. All of this is immaterial to the article and my response.

I think you're paranoid person. If you actually take the time to read the article and my response then apply comprehension skills; you'll notice that I am advocating less or different regulation so that banks can focus spending on truly effective security practices instead of millions of dollars on compliance with deliberately vague regulations that afford little protection. You're going on some rant about it not being solely the government's responsibility. wtf?

Online stealing is very different from stealing by "walking up to someone and taking what belongs to them." There is insurance, fraud protection, reimbursement, far less intimidation, coercion, etc. that make it very different. Your views on responsibility are slightly misplaced. The "security community" does not have a responsibility to protect people, or provide protection for banks, or have any obligations whatsoever. It's a concept that exists in your head. ISPs are typically obligated to honor their Service Level Agreements, e.g. provide IP connectivity, not protection to consumers (usually they limit their liability even!). You don't even mention banks! The nature of business is based on risk. If they have too much risk from spyware kiddies, they can find something else to do. Take a look at some of their profits and megamergers, I think they're putting food on the table quite nicely.

Yours truly,
Oofus F.B. III
