Skype security and privacy concerns

One of my stranger hobbies is collecting interesting and weird anecdotes I find in the news. I have a few areas that always fascinate me, such as finding people who miraculously escape certain death, or items about human memory and cognition, or eccentric individuals who embody some strange aspect of the human condition.

It's also interesting to look at how Skype works. It relies on "super-nodes" which are computers which have a public IP address, often home users on DSL or cable modems. It opens a port on these computers and listens for connections from other computers around the world. And, although their protocol is proprietary, as you say, some security researchers have looked into it. e.g. have a look at these two articles from Mark O'Neill of the XML security company Vordel:
