The development of the Internet was led by Dr. Lawrence G. Roberts http://www.ziplink.net/~lroberts/ while he was working for the U.S. government at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Dr. Paul V. Mockapetris and Jon Postel are credited with inventing/creating the Domain Name System (DNS). This was done at the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) of the University of Southern California in 1983. So both the Internet and the DNS system that supports "easy to remember names" were invented in the United States. Seems to me like its right where it belongs, where it was invented.
