With camera and network surveillance now commonplace, and database abuse continuing to appear, how do we balance the positive side of security along with its potential for abuse?

Something else to remember.
For every camera/information database that exists, someone (probably several someones) is trying or will try to access it illegally.
Also, you may trust the people in charge of it now, but will you be able to trust all the people who will ever have access to it? "Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely." Lord Acton 1887
I hated history in school. These days I can't read enough about it. History repeats itself over and over; it is really an eye opener.
