The big story the last few weeks has been the Sony BMG rootkit and in fact, it's the kind of story for which columnists drool: a big company does something unbelievably dumb that violates basic security principles. Personally I'd like to see the same (criminal law) rules applied to Sony as to other "organised distribution for profit" large scale copyright infringements - namely a fine/damages per infringement, destruction of all infringing copies AND destruction of all equipment used in the production of the infringing copies.
This is, as I understand it, the potential under UK criminal law regarding copyright. The situation in the US may be different.
