Regaining control
Kelly Martin, 2005-11-29

Securing endpoint systems by locking them down using complex software brings back memories of another era, where business computers were once used for business applications only - and businesses retained control over their assets and data.

You don't have to be trained in Security to know that the Internet is not THE vulnerability, but it is the reason we have to worry about these vulnerabilities. How do you think these buffer overflows, input validations, etc are being exploited? These are not problems from the 70s, they only become a problem when they are exposed to the hackers the Internet is responsible for creating. Do you think people would be hacking on their local network the way they do across the Internet? NO! If they did they may very well loose their job and end up in jail. So it IS the Internet that is the problem. Most people didn't even know what a buffer overflow was in the 70s. Plus it wasn't too hard to validate against a command prompt!
