Desensitization is indeed a deservice to society. People need to work for what they want, they need to know how to take care of themselves, if forced, they will do it. It is absurd to conclude with, they just wont try so hold their hand.
The best way to deal with the Joe Shmoes is to give them the tool, explain it well, and let em go at it on their own, practice makes perfect.
Technology makes us lazy so, we should as programmers, focus on educating one another and I believe the result will be a much more secure Internet.
