Tech support woes
Scott Granneman, 2006-01-20

Technical support that's outsourced to foreign countries can cause frustration and have a negative impact on security when the problems remain unsolved.

Then, be it like cars : if you wanna drive, get a licence. To get a licence, you'll be told how to change a tire, how tu correctly use breaks, how to drive on a (information)highway ...
Stop thinking at a computer like a VCR. Else, buy a set top box, you'll get some webpages, basic e-mails ... don't expect it to run Microsoft(R) Word & Excel, useless screensavers or Auto-fill-web-forms programs ...
Have you ever needed to 'update' your VCR to read new video tapes ???
If you hide complexity, you choose for the customer what he can or cannot do with his 'appliance'. But what is a Computer sold for ? Expandability, some sort of 'do-it-all' from textprocessing to video streaming from the web (I put aside 'porn dialers', 'FREE mp3 downloading', and the like).
Now that mobile phones are more and more running java and the like, the mobile phone 'appliance' will move from the VCR field to the Computer field. Therefore, it will have the same problems.
I agree that computers should be as easy to use as a VCR, but as a matter of fact, Computers will not be comparable to a VCR (in a near future, at least.).
Users are not stupid, they just don't know what they buy. As for now, to the question "is it safe to use the internet today with it's fun and fancy bells & whistles ?" my answer would be "no, it's not safe and not foolproof" ... rather buy a VCR instead.
