I remember a time only a few short decades ago where we gasped at reports that the KGB was spying on it's own citizens and had files on many of them. The Russian government insisted it was doing it to protect it's people. The KGB was notorious for implying that anyone who didn't cooperate with them was against the government.

America swore it would NEVER cross that line and thumped it's collective chest proudly that democracy was about protecting these rights.

Now the American government is spying on it's own citizens. It now insists it's only doing this to protect it's own people. The NSA now seems to imply that anyone not helping them is anti-American and not patriotic...

Deja vu.
