The fact of the matter is we have come to a point in our society where the rules of law, commerce, civility, etc. are all flexibly interpreted by those in power; be it a mayor deciding whether or not to enforce a low-bid procurement policy, the president of a corporation accepting prime sports tickets from a potential vendor, or even the President of the United States' loose legal interpretation of privacy laws. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating sitting back and accepting what is essentially the enevitable. Instead I see public dissent/debate as a means of imposing a (very light) check on where the extremists would otherwise take us.
