Retain or restrain access logs?
Mark Rasch, 2006-06-12

A recent proposal by the U.S. Department of Justice that would mandate Internet Service Providers to retain certain records represents a dangerous trend of turning private companies into proxies for law enforcement or intelligence agencies against the interests of their clients or customers.

I am in my 60's and never have I seen such an accelerated attack on civil liberties (privacy) as I have seen in the last 10 years. I am so tired of worn out cliche's "in the interest of national security." or "in order to fight crime." I cringe when I hear people say, "I have nothing to hide, let them (government) look all they want." I immediately start asking these individuals such questions as, you ever had a homosexual experience? You ever cheated on your wife? You ever been treated for an STD. You ever stolen anything? You ever cheated on your taxes. I keep pressing for answers on these and other very personal questions until they finally become angry and reply it is none of your business. My reply is, EXACTLY! It sure as hell is none of the government's business either, but soon will be with such attitudes like you have. The late J. Edgar Hoover demonstrated only too well how sensitive personal information can misused to silence dissidents and bring anyone into line who disagrees with government positions and policies. How soon some forget. Let's also not forget, as someone mentioned previously, the government's sloppy security of protecting personal information. I come back to one of Ben Franklin's famous utterances and I paraphrase, Any people only too willing to give up their personal liberties in order to be safe deserve neither. I have always somewhat considered the ACLU a bunch of nutcases. However, they seem to be some of the few presently questioning things going on. Don't look to Congress for help soon, if ever. They are so wrapped up in collecting campaign funds and cutting deals with special interest groups, they have no time for anything else such as looking at things hidden in bills they pass.
