My wife and I wrote a book "MySpace Safety: 51 Tips for Teens and Parents" that has as its primary goal the education of parents (so that they can understand what social networking is, why it's important to their teens, why prohibiting it solves nothing) so they can speak with calm reason to their teens rather than frantic screams.

The parents are rightfully afraid -- an unforeseen threat has suddenly entered the world. One of the comparisons we use in the book is with the type of practices that are common sense when we walk down the street. This type of common sense needs to be developed with regard to online social networking.
