The great challenge of parenting for me has been the need to balance the safety of my children with the need to teach them the benefits of intelligent risk taking. Frankly, I don't think I'm that good at it myself, and that's not a knock on my parents, they certainly did their best. What scares us, perhaps, is the availability to our children of something, in this case social networking systems, for which we lack (and sometimes just think we lack)a point of reference from our own youth. Media and other parties seeking to make some profit from the situation merely exacerbate the situation. I feel it's incumbent upon us, not just as security professionals but Information Technology professionals, to ensure that someone is there to help people maintain proper perspective on these new, disruptive, technologies.
