Not the best example in the world--getting a teen to do homework falls somewhere under the heading of "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. You can also lead a youth to knowledge, but you can't make them think. I can't for the life of me force my now 15 year old son to do his homework even when I yank all of his privelages until he chooses to do homework. I also required that he sit in my home office with his books and work on his homework and yet still he would fritter away his time rather than work on his homework. That having been said however, when it comes to myspace, I set up my own myspace account so I could keep track of what was going on with my sons' myspace interactions. I also make him use the laptop in whatever room I'm in at the time to do anything on the computer. You're right, the majority of parents don't work very hard on their parenting skills, and then they wonder what the heck happened to their children.
