Substitute teacher Julie Amero faces up to 40 years in prison for exposing kids to porn using a classroom computer, but the facts strongly suggest that she was wrongfully convicted. Many issues remain, from the need for an independent computer forensics investigation and the presence of spyware and adware on the machine, to bad or incomplete legal work on both sides of this criminal case.

First, we don't know what type of computer it was. There are some Macs, like the iMac, that have the monitor built in. A few PCs tried to clone the iMac look, resulting in a PC with a built-in monitor. (The article says Windows, so a Mac is out but a PC-clone with built-in monitor is possible.)
Second, we really don't know how technical she was. Since she was told to not logout, she may have equated turning off the monitor to turning off the computer. Granted, this is "obvious" to us techies, it may not be obvious to a non-techie.
This goes along with Mark's comment about the "angora defense" (put a sweater over it). If this were obvious to non-techies, then why didn't anyone at the school suggest it? (And guys frequently forget that women wear sweaters without shirts underneath. If this was the case, were they suggesting that she go topless in order to take attention away from the monitor?)
