Mouse-Trapped

Substitute teacher Julie Amero faces up to 40 years in prison for exposing kids to porn using a classroom computer, but the facts strongly suggest that she was wrongfully convicted. Many issues remain, from the need for an independent computer forensics investigation and the presence of spyware and adware on the machine, to bad or incomplete legal work on both sides of this criminal case.

Why didn't she unplug the computer. Why didn't she run an anti-spyware program. Why didn't she go into regedit and delete the bad registry entries. You can Monday morning quarterback this all you want, but that isn't valid logic. Like most teachers, she was not as computer savvy as you are, and she panicked. I would bet if you recreated this event with other teachers, you would get the exact same response. So lets not be the "I always know what to do in any situation" here. The fact is that the malware is the most likely cause for what happened, and her failure to do what you think she should have done is not cause to go to jail for 40 years. What amazes me most about this case is not the tremendous lack of justice, but rather the lack of understanding some people have for those who don't know everything there is to know about computers. It is pompous and arrogant, and not how we need to be towards other human beings.
