I wrote a column for Securityfocus some time ago that aired my concerns over GIAC dropping the practical portion of their certification process. That column resulted in a lot of feedback, with most agreeing about how GIAC bungled what was up till then, the best certification around.

Thruth has it that certs are personal and do not lead to much more than personal advance for the holder of the cert. Alltogether there are some good certs out there (GIAC still being among them) and in the end there are 'standards' like OSSTMM to 'certify' the quality of a specific product delivered.
