Security conferences versus practical knowledge
Don Parker, 2007-07-18

Since computers became mainstream in the early to mid-nineties a whole ecosystem has developed around them, in order to maintain that humble computer. The various parts of that ecosystem range from the companies who make computers to the software companies who program for them.

I agree 100%
In my organization, conferences like that are viewed mostly as entertainment. Some sessions will provide insight but without a focus on practical application and skill development there is no sense in attending a conference formatted session. I would be very surprised if one of my staff returned from a session with a great new skill set. On the other hand, where I have lowered my expectations at conferences, I have equally raised my expectations when it is called training.
Training should never be confused with workshops or focus meetings or user conferences no matter what the subject. Training that fails to focus on skill development and practical application of knowledge should be regared as entertainment as well.
