Security conferences versus practical knowledge
Don Parker, 2007-07-18

Since computers became mainstream in the early to mid-nineties a whole ecosystem has developed around them, in order to maintain that humble computer. The various parts of that ecosystem range from the companies who make computers to the software companies who program for them.

Security conferences versus practical knowledge 2007-07-19

It's a good thing the world ain't so black&/white as some writes like to make it - to get some not-real-world statement out on the front page of a website.

First of all, respect to all my fellow colleagues out there who work with IT Security on a daily basis.

And we know what the real deal is, and the several layers of knowledge we get from attending a security conference:

First of all:
- Get out of the office, into a setting where fellow people who has the same issues and obstacles, and be able to discuss these over a beer in general terms.
- Meet up with vendors and partners to discuss issues with their products or solutions, build relationsships and networks that you can use on a daily basis.
- Look at new products or changes in the old ones, that might solve issues you don't have time to identify while in the office
- Take training with colleagus, and through that identify new ways to work when back in the office
- Listening to speakers to get a reminder of what's actually possible using the technology we deal with every day.

But, the most important thing I've learned through my years attending different conferences is the fact that:
Getting out of the office with colleagues enables you to solve issues, look at stuff from different angles and really helps you open your eyes to some of the things you work with daily.

So there is no "versus" in this. It's not like we (the it security guys) turn of our ability to connect the things we hear and see on a conference with our practical knowledge. And we do learn alot that we add to that knowledge on the conferences.

If you're unable to achieve that...you're missing out, and are to focused on finding flaws in the conference you're attending.
