Security conferences versus practical knowledge
Don Parker, 2007-07-18

Since computers became mainstream in the early to mid-nineties a whole ecosystem has developed around them, in order to maintain that humble computer. The various parts of that ecosystem range from the companies who make computers to the software companies who program for them.

This is ridiculous. I guess its your opinion on this, but security conferences can be extremely valuable. Just because YOU are not doing malware analysis, packet decodes, IDS signature design, etc. doesn't mean that the rest of the community isn't.

I think for many people these conferences are highly useful and while some of the topics can be largely academic or theoretical, that doesn't mean they aren't useful or practical. Besides, there are many people who find these types of talks very useful for their job functions.

Of course if you're a monkey that just manages a Windows AD forest, a lot of it may not matter, but don't discount the fact that this info IS useful to many.

Stick to SANS if you want hand holding and regurgitated info from Security Focus et al. Go to BlackHat, DefCon, CanSecWest, etc. when you are ready to take the next step into thinking about security issues on your own.
