Since computers became mainstream in the early to mid-nineties a whole ecosystem has developed around them, in order to maintain that humble computer. The various parts of that ecosystem range from the companies who make computers to the software companies who program for them.

I would add this thought. You have to do it all. It's necessary to get out and see people, places and new things in the 'industry'. You have to hide in the basement configuring gear, you have to spend countless hours at the library, you have to read everything you can get your hands on, you have to take the class, pass the test. Spend hours writing code, reading magazines, talking to gurus at trade shows, etc. You have to try, fail, succeed, imitate, create, as much as possible.
If you don't, then you'll be less that all you could be, and you'll be short. Train hard, fight easy. Simple as that. IMHO.
