A smoke detector does not prevent a fire. It detects smoke, presumably from a fire.
I do agree on the ironic quality of the agent working to protect you from danger causing the very danger it was designed to protect your from (and, in case I have to go all the way : the word protect here is used in the sense that a warning, the sound, is a form of protection against imminent danger (here : burning to a crisp in a fire - I want it to be understood very clearly that I do not joke about burn wounds nor do I find them even remotely amusing).
To stay on topic and to add my useless opinion to the other useless opinions : there is no greater risk to the corporate enterprise than Senior Management. Nothing so ubiquitously present, so obnoxious, so insensitive to common sense, so determined to run the company into the ground for the sake of ego, so blind to the strikingly obvious, so machiavellan, so spiteful, so callous and brutal as senior management. It creates the likes of William Gates III, Larry Ellison, Steve Jobs. It results in your pension fund being worthless, the environment being destroyed and entire populations being deprived of a decent living.
It starts by making claims that are nothing but lies, it ends with Enron. Or, to quote Douglas Noel Adams, the greatest philospher in the history of the species : "Life is wasted on the living".
How's that for pedantic ?
