OS utilities and public "keys" 2008-01-23

It seems to me that the computer/house analogy is often incorrect because computers use permissions and the commands (keys) are public. Whether you type, click, or push a button, nothing happens without using that bundle of keys that the OS provides. We probably all agree that to control access in a public place you typically either post a sigh (eg. private) or lock the door, and that there may be some unwritten rules as well. However, on a computer ALL utilities, such as "host", have execute permission signs which tell you explicitly whether you can or cannot run them. Furthermore, if a utility or program will run on a computer then it is because it has a sign saying you are allowed to do so, otherwise (unless you misrepresent yourself) it simply wouldn't run. In other words it has a publicly available sign that says "public". (Of course, if you bring your own utilities to the site, then that is another story.) Maby I'm out of my depth and misunderstand permissions in public places such as internet servers, but that is how I see it.
