Click Crime

It has long been a crime not only to commit an illegal act, but also to attempt -- or conspire with others -- to commit one.

I'm struck by this line:

"In each case, the FBI successfully prosecuted the owners of the computers for attempting to obtain child pornography by "clicking on an illegal hyperlink."

I'm mostly struck by what it doesn't say. It doesn't say that any of those people were convicted of actual child pornography, implying that when their systems were examined there was no other evidence to convict them of child pornography other than the fact that they clicked the bait link. Which means that (unless my premise is incorrect) 100% or very close to 100% of those clicks were false positives, but those people are now convicted of a crime. Not just any crime - a sex crime. Now they are sex offenders and have to register in those databases. This is blatantly ridiculous.
