Blaming the Good Samaritan
Houston Carr, 2008-09-26

In the early 90's, I attended an academic conference in Hawaii. At one presentation, a colleague from the University of California at Berkeley whom I'll refer to as "the supervisor," told a story of young hackers, who he referred to as the Urchins.

Any "good samaritans" need to look at it this way. Suppose someone picks the lock to your house/apartment. They send you a letter telling you what they did and recommending a pick-proof lock. Do you just get the new lock and call it even? Or do you worry about what they might have stolen? About what they might have left? About hidden cameras/microphones they might have installed? You have no idea what they did, and just because they said they did nothing, do you really believe them? It's the same for electronically breaking into a company without their prior consent. They know nothing about you or your motives. And it's going to cost them a good deal of time and money to make sure everything is as it should be.
