In the early 90's, I attended an academic conference in Hawaii. At one presentation, a colleague from the University of California at Berkeley whom I'll refer to as "the supervisor," told a story of young hackers, who he referred to as the Urchins.

The son can legally break into his father's home, provided he lives there. He normally has access to the house. What if it was not the son but a helpful neighbor? Someone who doesn't have a key, but goes around the neighborhood trying to pick locks for the purpose of making sure that everyone's houses are safe. He does this out of "duty of care" - because burglaries in the neighborhood will lower his own house's value.
