Blaming the Good Samaritan
Houston Carr, 2008-09-26

In the early 90's, I attended an academic conference in Hawaii. At one presentation, a colleague from the University of California at Berkeley whom I'll refer to as "the supervisor," told a story of young hackers, who he referred to as the Urchins.

I agreed. Break-in analogy is not applicable unless it is the perp is breaking in his house. The university has something of his at stake. His info.

The world is changing and mindset will need to change as well. Security is now a performance metric similar to that of uptime. Sys Admin should be accountable to failure to protect. Law are already in place. Perhaps the student in question should talk to other students who have their info at stake and start a class action lawsuit against the university for failure to protect his info. He should also take his case to the privacy commissioner of Canada as well.

Changes in the world are driven by the minority. It is surprising that university, places that encourage free thinking are so resistant to change when they are the subject.
