Is it a crime to read someone else’s e-mail without their consent?

Laws do not merely create a deterrent, they also create options for when an incident does occur. The legal reaction to a break in is very much relevant. Though it may be somewhat of an overstatement to say the law is as important as the technical counter-measures, it is equally rash to suggest they have no value.

If you don't want to read about the legal implications, perhaps you shouldn't read a lawyer's column?
