They tried DRM through Windows Anytime Upgrade on Vista and then in Feb 08 they had to withdraw that program worldwide and revert to upgrades only being shipped via DVD's!
Microsoft needs to leave the home user alone and let them have free software (that?s the only way they will kill off Open Source/Linux etc) and focus on the business and government account sector from SMEs right up to Fortune 100 companies.
Microsoft can solve piracy within business and government accounts very easily without lockdowns and at the same time offer a benefit to organizations (not home users as they need to leave them untouched so they don?t lose their loyal user base) by offering a solution that is embedded within the OS that helps an organization reduce its cost of auditing and compliance. It can be done, they just don't want to do it!
