For the last few years, Microsoft has wrestled with their stance on piracy. Pirated operating systems are just like legitimate operating systems in terms of their exposure to vulnerabilities: Users must install patches or they will be compromised.

I don't like much Microsoft and the DRM stuff (and prefer to use Linux and NetBSD,) but I have to agree that it doesn't make sense to held Microsoft responsible of pirated version that might well be pirated, and I agree with their practices in this respect.
If most people were keeping updated systems, then Spammers would just concentrate on distributing Trojaned pirated versions of Windows.
Also, how many zombies are actually running on systems with an illegal Windows copy? I have seen so many people with a legal version of Windows without the latest security updates, that I don't think it will make a big difference on the number of botnet, especially since spammers also sometime exploit security problems for which there is still no patch at all (and then hide until they need the zombie).
In my opinion, finding a solution so that most people would have both a legal and up to date version of their OS and application (weither it is Windows or something else) would be much closer to a real solution.
