I just spend $60 clearing a virus off my PC. I've had to do that about every other year forever. If someone doesn't put a stop to Internet activity that harms everyday users we run the risk of a Wild West syndrome. Essentially, the Internet will become so wild with abuse as to become useless for legitimate business and will decline to a point it becomes useless for everyday users. The backbone providers are in the best position to exclude bad actors. However, since they profit from the increased traffic volume caused by SPAM and other disruptive activities they have no incentive to police those activities. As a result, the Internet becomes Chicago of the 1930's with people like Al Copone ruling the day. Where is our Elliot Ness? I hope he arrives soon.
