i need to leave for an appointment but just read your post and will post what I wrote to Joanna here for all to read.
I need to research and get my facts all ironed out to legitimize what I am saying, but here is the story.

I had a similar experience.
Mine was a bit more directed at me personally.
I have changed my files and system over so many times now that I don't have the records of the names but one was bad trans, one was annoying somethin or other and there were two more. My virus software would catch them, and I would destroy them, run a full scan and find they were in place again as .sbx files I think. I could go through some other hard drives and research this again but am now running ntsf file system and haven't so far found a problem (fingers and toes crossed).

The effect (i theorize, can't prove) this worm problem had for
me was almost tragic. Apparently my keystroke being logged by someone, I believe knew me and had been offended by me in some way and used to contact others using my address. The person would take things that I had written to someone and continue the conversation but not in a positive way. This did some irreparable damage to some promising friendships I was forming, and it is difficult to convince people of such a bizzare type of reason. I am a bit odd to begin with and it sounded like my phrasology in the emails etc. I never will hear from one really great guy again because of this problem, sigh. Then there was another occurance that lost me a great deal of sleep. This person began playing a skillfull game with me and was successful at manipulating me into a hide and seek type of game to figure out who was doing this. I got deeply involved in following hunches I thought were doing the job as he/she was noting my direction of research and placing content in those places I would look through various hacker's type methods. Whoever this person is they are gifted in figuring out ways to do up a website with all the trimmings and "fast". I stayed up long nights and swore I was going to give up the hunt "today" and then I would get somewhere. I got obbsessive. Needless to say, I was trying to talk to a mean and probably bitter person who had much more savvy on the internet than I. I am still puzzled and suspicious of people who I am close to that have computer skills, wondering which of them took so much time out of their life to do this to me. I am also ashamed of myself for having so little sense :(or listening to my better sense)and flirting with disaster by trying to track them. I remained in a vulnerable state the entire time period as this person was actively reading my emails and what ever else the key stroke thingie was allowing them to view. I am one to put much into my computer I do NOT want viewed by others. Not illegal just private and sensitive.

I knew from a certain point that I had a compromised system and that no virus software was going to be a complete safeguard. There are webpages that have codes in them and other things that create a Trojan effect that are not a virus I guess. Also DSL is often easier than it should be to gain access to others on DSL.

A side note, During this time I downloaded the Microsoft reader. I went to activation site and my virus software sounded the alarm. I looked at the URL and it said das. microsoft.com!!! like a nazi type name. I did the proper notifying of microsoft and was persistent. I have only recieved very non commital type responses, thank you for your information, we'll look into it. I went to the site. it still alive. IT IS STILL ALIVE TODAY!!!

RUN A WHO IS ON THIS SITE AND YOU'LL GET SOME PRETTY FUNNY STUFF.

also the MICROSOFT web page only activated my virus software as i clicked to activate my MICROSOFT reader to read my ebook.
