The Australian government is considering requiring that Internet service providers in that country install filters which would prevent citizens from accessing tens of thousands of sites that contain "objectionable" material.

The theme of your article is well intentioned but your final suggestion seems simplistic. First, those seeking child porn would not use the filter so that wouldn't stop the practice. Second, folks who choose not to use the filter for other reasons may be falsely characterized as potential child porn viewers. Of course only ISP snooping could tell the difference in the two groups. Finally, as you mentioned, ISPs already filter for spam but I do not remember being offered any choice to opt out (probably could dig thru the mail options to find it). Big Brother is already watching.
