A Security Wish List for 2002
Jon Lasser, 2002-01-09

An end to buffer overflows, and a beginning to serious user education ... These are a few of my favorite things.

It may be true that a programmer can get by today
without knowing a single bit of assembler, but they
will never actually understand what it is they are
doing. The language you program in has vast
influences on the types programs you write (or even
imagine). Understanding how a computer actually works
is absolutly nessessary to developing expert skills.
If you're content to remain a VB-useing weenie, go right
ahead, but I'd rather know what it is I'm actually
doing. Without knowledge of assembler, all code is
reduced to Voodoo Programing (see the Jargon file
for details).

P.S. You also need to know a little ASM to play CoreWars
(aka RedCode), which is one of the most fun computer
games of all time.
