Security is not about trusting others, it is about changing one's behavior and modifying one's life. Expecting others to behave in a reasonable manner puts all responsibility on what happens in one's life on others instead of one's self. The defense becomes "It's his fault because he came in my open house" rather than "It's my fault because I didn't protect myself".
Take responsibility for your life and don't expect others to protect you.
