The internet is and will, with the exception of certain closed loop applications, always be an open system subject to interception of communications and data. It can not be secured sufficiently through technology... and the more corporate interests represent higher developmental priorities than consumer interests the less secure the consumer can be.
I would also like to note that the internet does not represent any more or less security risk to the individual than the paper system of the non-net world. The internet does represent a somewhat higher security threat to commercial interests however because of the magnitude of damage that can be accomplished by a single intrusion at that level.
