In which your intrepid columnist hands over $450 to sit for the CISSP exam, only to conclude that it measures little of value.

Pass it and respect it. Do not pass it and blame the test.

Our managers have no clue as to what we do, or what it takes
to perform security duties. I see all these experts, miss
basic functions like changing default passwords and other such trivial ommisions. It's how well you take a test, that
determines your contribution to an organization. It feels like an MLM marketing ploy to keep this testing industry alive. The technologies and tools change weekly, the bugs increase in exponential proportions, but we have a 250 question test determine our contribution to our company security position. You need 3K every few years to keep up
with all the certs. Your boss will not pay, for fear you will take your knowledge on to your next job. He or she will not purchase a virus checker for your email server, but
expects you to stop the click to see Nadia in her full splendor users. Let get real folks, passing these tests means you can memorize well, and know how to avoid parametric adaptive bull. Long live the script kidies who bring reality to this press 1 for a vb or 2 for a java virus world.
PS. I need 12K more a year to pay for the ongoing certification schemes. I am glad you do not need a certification to reboot the system. Pay per view for a lame
world. Why don't we make it so a terrorist needs a certification to crash an airliner into a tall building. He and now she will have to know the exact fireball temp, and be able to calculate if the building will collapse.
